PDK/Gallup Poll — No Luv for NCLB

The annual PDK/Gallup Poll on public education is out, and it shows that more Americans are disenchanted with NCLB. They fault it for narrowing the curriculum and relying too much on standardized testing while not preparing kids for the global economy.

PDK’s highlights from the poll include:

  • Only 1 in 4 Americans believe that NCLB is helping their local schools; the rest believe the law is either making no difference or hurting schools.

  • For the first time since 2003, more Americans have an unfavorable view (40%) of NCLB than a favorable one (31%).

  • Similarly, for the first time, more Americans (49%) would blame the law if large numbers of schools fail to meet the requirements than would blame the schools (43%).

Here’s a one-pager (PDF) from PDK of the findings. And here’s NEA’s take on it.

Let’s just hope the politicians actually listen to what the public is asking for in this poll, and actually adopt measures based on science and real classroom experiences, instead of politically expedient campaign rhetoric.
