Bush Cronies Profited While They Halliburton-ized Public Schools
You might remember that back in 2005, Congress asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate whether the Department of Education pushed schools to buy books from certain publishers with close ties to Bush.
And then in April of this year, Congress held an investigation into the $6 billion Reading First program, Bush’s centerpiece of NCLB, and the Justice Department announced it was conducting a probe.
“That sounds like a criminal enterprise to me,” said Rep. George Miller (D-CA). “You don’t get to override the law,” he angrily told a panel of Reading First officials. “But the fact of the matter is that you did.”
In May, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) released his report on abuses and “conflicts of interest” within the program.
